Sport Should Be In Your Blood Not In Your Bones Or Joints

Did you know that 10% of all injuries in developed countries are sports injuries, and each year about 20 million patients present to orthopedic specialist accusing various knee problems?

One study shows that in handball:

Every 1000 hours of training occur around 2 injuries, and 10 times more during the competition.

During a season spent around 320,000 injuries. Annual medical costs are expected to 400 million euros! Half of this amount represents the knee joint injuries.

We were instilled the idea that if you train longer and more intensely you do performance.

The efficiency of a training performance is based on the balance between training and recovery.

The recovery of athletes may have a passive form and one active form. One of the passive form is sleeping and it is one of the best methods of recovery and rest. Are recommended at least 7-9 hours of sleep for an athlete to be able to integrate the experiences of the day.

Another form of passive recovery is disconnected from surrounding stimuli through meditation, reading or listening to music.

The activities included in recovery activities can be during or at the end of training. They target several objectives: the recovery of the physiological condition of the athlete, the regeneration status scheletare musculoskeletal, psychological recovery.

Easy walk or riding a bike is useful in recovering the physiological state while stretching exercises musculoskeletal, scheletar bring back balance.For psychological recovery, it is recommended visualization exercises, breathing or meditation.

To maintain the welfare of the psyche is recommended involvement in recreational activities, other than sports, I recommend disconnecting itself, the variety of interests etc.

Another form of active recovery is cross training, which usually refers to combining training with moderate intensity exercises , other of the athlete of the usual practice. Examples are swimming or walks after an intense workout.

Sport should be in your blood, not in your joints or bones.

“I DO NOT KNOW” Syndrome

Have you ever been in the position to start a new journey, a new career and feel that you know nothing?

In that hypostasis I was myself. When my sports career ended suddenly (to be read “tragically” ), my life was overwhelmed.
I started handball at a very early age. I remember that at the age of 14 I first get paid for my play. At 18, I had a double salary for my parents’ wages together.
Up to 25 years of age passion and job have been my sport.

At 25, after many injuries, I had to stop.
And then I thought, for the first time, that “I know nothing, except being a handball player.”
I started exploring new passions, I took makeup and manicure classes and I set up a beauty salon, then I took secretarial classes, I organised parties for kids. In none of these activities I couldn’t find myself. But I understood one thing: the determination to do everything as well as possible was present as it was when I played handball.

At the call of a friend I started working with a Business Coach. I remember the first meeting so well. To each question Dan asked me, I had the same answer : ”I DO NOT KNOW”.
What was extraordinary is that behind every “I do not know,” I discovered that I knew exactly what I wanted, but I was afraid to assume, I was afraid of failure, and if I said “I do not know” I was in my comfort zone. But when you work with the right people, they help you discover and assume what you want from life. This was my case, and now, as a Coach, I often recognize this situation.

For a while, I thought sportsmen were going to do it most often.
Recently, I was asked for help by a fresh college graduate.
he moved to Bucharest and he needed a job.
The first step was to make a CV. I asked him to talk to me about the job he wants, where he wants to work.
I was not surprised when he started with “I DO NOT KNOW”.
And how can you make a resume if you do not know what to do?
It’s simple! You need to find out who you are, what you want, what you are passionate about, what talents can be of use to you.
This was our starting point. Following our discussion, he found answers, better clarity about what he want, made a contact list, had a homework theme, and a lot of encouragement. Most importantly, we have managed to make a perfect CV for him.
I was not surprised when, just a week later, he announced me that he’ve got a job at a company he could not even dreamed he could get it so fast.


An important step of helping you to get out of that comfort zone is to start working with a Coach or a consultant who can help you take the right steps to discover, plan and achieve your goal.

Another Approach In Order To Build a Successful Team


Last year I’ve been following the “Club Manager Seminar” because I wanted to see how the mangers from different sport clubs across Europe approach their work. It has been a great experience.

Last week, from 1st to 3rd of June, the seminar took place again in Cologne, Germany. It has been an honour for me to be invited as a speaker. The theme of this year was “focus on the player”.

With my presentation “ Another approach in order to build a successful team”, I want people be aware that exists another approach that thru their work and thru their position they can touch the lives of many other people.

Here are few ideas from my presentation.

What do you need to do in order to build a successful team?

(ex: to get good players, to get sponsors, to get a good coach / write down everything you may need or have)

Hold space for your team.

Is this ring a bell? (take a moment and think of it)
Let me explain what mean to hold space.

To hold space means that we are willing to walk alongside another in whatever journey they are on, without judging them, making them feel inadequate, tying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome.

A space is a place of potential, a place where things can happen and a place where something can expand.
Together, “holding space” encompasses some very important concepts. To hold space is to create and maintain a place where things can exist, expand and grow.

Holding space is also validating the other’s experience, not necessarily with words, but with attainment.
Holding space for your team means that you put the team in the centre of your focus, priority and centre of attention.

This are few tips you must be aware of in order to hold space for your team :
1. Be present
2. Practice active listening
3. Keep your own ego out of it
4. Give people permission to trust their own intuition and wisdom.

Now that we know what “holding space” means, there are few important aspect you need to clarify:
The 1st aspect is : Who are your team members?

The 2nd aspect is : Once you know who is your team make sure they know what is your clear common goal, then you can establish their roles, activities and responsibilities.

The 3rd aspect is : Treat your team members as your partners.
The success of any team is a partnership between teammates and leaders. (Stay with this for a few seconds and imagine what that means to you ).

To hold the space for your team also mean that you:

Play to peoples strengths (don’t focus on their weakness)
There can be no greater service you can do to someone else than to help them discover their strengths and then build on them. It is like discovering diamonds in rocks and polishing them until they sparkle.

Help people develop.
One of the best indicators of emotional intelligence is the willingness and ability of a person to help develop others. Those who have this aspect of EI are aware that they can develop others in tandem with developing themselves. They are confident enough in themselves and their own abilities that they will not be threatened by the success of others. They recognise that helping others to achieve their goals is a win-win situation: it makes them feel connected to and invested in others, which in turn enhances a sense of belonging and teamwork.

Lead by example.
Good leaders must lead by example: take responsibility, be truthful, be persistent, create solutions, listen, ask, be courageous, encourage an atmosphere in witch people can focus on their core strengths.

At the 2017 Club Manager Seminar I met people who want to change the sport world and make it better and better.  My message for you is : DO IT!  You have all what is takes to change the world of so many handball players.

Meet Christophoros Nungovitch a Very Talented Goalkeeper

I’ve  meet Chris when I’ve played in Cyprus. We were playing for the same club. Since then I appreciated his talent and dedication for handball. Now is plays abroad and he accepted to share some thoughts with us 🙂

1.When did you start your sport activity?

It was November ’99 , I was 9 years old.
I was playing football with my friends from neighbourhood close to a sport hall. A young team of SPE Strovolou train inside. I went inside and watched the game for the first time in my life. That was the moment I fell in love with handball. Immediately I asked the coach if I can joy and that was the start of my handball career.

2. You are playing now in France. How easy it was for you to adapt in the new country?

Sure, is very difficult because of the language barrier. I have 2 months here and now I know the basics and I hope soon I will speak fluent French.Also the culture is different than Cyprus and Greece but I have an amazing good relationship with my colleagues and stuff and this helps a lot.

3. What is the greatest moment of your handball career?
My greatest handball moment it was when I won the EHF Challenge Cup in 2012 with my club from Greece.

4. What is your greatest failure and what did you lear from it? Were there moments when you wanted to quit?
It hurts very much when you loose a game in front of 5000 supporters. But you can only look forward to the next victory.
A big disappointment was when in Greece the team had big financial problems and they did not respected my contract. That was the moment I’ve been thinking to quite handball and go back home.

5. What is your biggest challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge?

My dream is to play in german league. As a young goalkeeper I know I have the abilities to be a top goalkeeper. I think I passed a big challenge in my life leavening the greek league. Is not easy to find a team what will not judge your value by the handball level of the country you came from.
Montelimar give me the chance to play in France, N1 and we just won the 1st game. I had 18 saves and this good start give me a great feeling about how much I can help the team.
I work everyday to accomplish my dream and to reach the top of my career in a top handball team.
